Your child will be a part of a Den, a small group of Scouts (6-12) in the same grade level. Den leaders are parents who coordinate the schedule and meeting places, and look to other parents in the Den to help with activities. All Dens make up our Pack.
Scouts work on themed requirements called “Adventures” throughout the year for their rank badge. In our Pack, Dens complete requirements for rank badges in time to receive them in a formal ceremony in May.
Here is what to expect your Dens to work on toward advancement for the year:
Lion
Tiger
Wolf
Bear
Webelos
Arrow of Light
Cub Scouts have two uniforms:
Class A uniform: a formal uniform that is worn to most events and all Den Meetings.
Class B uniform: a more casual t-shirt "uniform," typically worn to active and outdoor events. Class B t-shirts are included in the Pack fee and will be provided at the first event.
The 3 items below marked with a ⚜️ are required. All others are nice to have, and go a long way to create confidence and a sense of belonging in your Scout.
The main Class A uniform components are:
Shirt ⚜️: The official blue/khaki uniform shirt is available with long or short sleeves and has button-flap pockets. We recommend short sleeves. Lions have simpler collarless t-shirt as an introductory uniform.
Pants: Shorts, long pants, skorts, and roll up pants all are in official blue. (We recommend the zip off pants)
Belt ⚜️: Official navy-blue web belt with metal buckle. (This is where all the adventure belt loops they earn will be worn)
The next three items change with every year, and match their Den emblem. While not required, they do make your Scout look sharp!
Hat: Official blue hat with den emblem.
Neckerchief: Triangular neckerchief with den logo.
Neckerchief slide: Official gold-tone metal slide with den emblem.
For patches we will provide the Pack 54 Unit Number patch. You will need to buy the Michigan Crossroads Council Strip, the World Crest emblem, and the 115 Years of Scouting World Crest Ring (optional, but fancy!)
Use this guide as a reference for patch placement.
You should also purchase a Handbook ⚜️ for your current Den.
All of these items can be purchased online at the Scout Shop. If you would rather test the fit and purchase in person, the easiest place in the area to purchase a uniform, including all patches, is the Ann Arbor Scout Shop. They will also sew on patches for an additional fee.
The cost of Cub Scouting can be broken into the following categories:
National Scouting America fee: $170 (payable online)
Annual Pack dues: $130 (payable via Zelle)
Uniform: the cost of the uniform is not covered by fees. At minimum, we require an official Class A shirt with patches. You can find the uniform online, but we recommend the scout shop in Ypsilanti to try on the uniform, and they can walk you through options.
Parent and sibling participation: fees cover your Youth, but not parent costs for events like the annual overnight. We are a family pack - siblings are welcome to all Pack events, and may be required to pay extra in some cases.
Fees cover most Pack and Den activities, as well as a Class B t-shirt for your child.
